SUMMARY:PPEL Summer School 2026
DESCRIPTION:Exploring Society’s Challenges: The PPEL Undergraduate Summer School\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Philosophy\, Politics\, Economics\, and Law (PPEL) Undergraduate Summer School features a curriculum focusing on the practical problems of organizing and running human society. The summer school is supported by a grant from the John Templeton Foundation #62965. Registration\, meals and student housing is FREE. \n\nStudents address questions about the nature of citizenship and the role individuals play in making critical decisions facing society.\nEmphasis is placed on an overview of how markets work and under what conditions they create wealth and prosperity\, including consideration of when markets fail to function well.\nThe program also explores the role of political institutions in structuring market exchange and allocating resources.\n\nThe summer school strengthens and refines students’ critical thinking skills\, cultivating intellectual humility that enables them to learn from others\, including those they disagree with. Topics that will be addressed include: \n\nThe nature and justification of property rights.\nThe use of market prices in coordinating economic activity.\nHow trust and reciprocity facilitate personal exchange.\nThe moral dimensions of cost-benefit analysis\, exploitation\, and repugnant transactions.

Visit Date: Oct. 12 – 16\, 2026 \nLaura Razzolini is Professor of Economics and Department Head at the University of Alabama. Her research specializes in public and behavioral economics. She conducts economic experiments in a laboratory setting to test predictions of the theoretical models. Her work on altruism\, fundraising and cost sharing mechanisms\, traffic congestions and terrorism has been funded by the National Science Foundation. Her research has been published in the Journal of Economic Theory\, Journal of Public Economics\, Economic Theory\, Public Choice\, and Experimental Economics. For 16 years she served as Editor in chief of the Southern Economic Journal. She currently serve as Vice President of the Southern Economic Association and on the Executive Committee of the Economic Science Association.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
