What is the point of free speech? Traditional accounts emphasize the rights of speakers and listeners against state interference, but Joshi highlights a deeper epistemic role. Because we rely so heavily on others’ testimony and because evidence is often mixed, freedom of expression is essential to maintaining healthy epistemic resources. Without it, perverse incentives emerge that discourage discovery and sharing of inconvenient evidence, leaving our collective reasoning impoverished.
