Spencer Case is a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the Center for the Philosophy of Freedom. He earned his PhD in Philosophy from the University of Colorado Boulder in 2018. Afterwards, he served as an international research fellow at Wuhan University from 2019-2021 then as an Assistant Teaching Professor at Bowling Green State University from 2023-2025.
His research focuses on the nature of normativity—i.e. “ought-ness”—but also extends to areas such as war ethics, moral realism, and political philosophy. He is the coauthor, with Matt Lutz, of Is Morality Real? A Debate and is currently working on his next book, Why It’s Ok to Be Patriotic, along with several new papers. He is the host of Micro-Digressions: A Philosophy Podcast.
A veteran of the U.S. Army, Case deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan as part of the Global War on Terrorism. In addition to his academic publications, he is an active writer and podcaster, engaging wide audiences on questions of philosophy, history, and politics.
