The very first Law, Markets, and Policy Workshop in beautiful Acciaroli, took place this summer from June 19 – 21. Over three inspiring days, Freedom Center leadership gathered with scholars and friends from around the world to talk about the big questions at the intersection of law, markets, and public policy. There were engaging presentations, thoughtful debates, shared meals, and meaningful connections — all set against the stunning backdrop of southern Italy.

So we hope that this program will invite each of us to reflect deeply on our legal and economic institution. Shape trust, responsibility, and the very possibility of a well-ordered society...The aim, as Marcello said, was really to try to bring together scholars that don't always share the same room or even the same vocabulary, but were asking overlapping questions about justice, legitimacy, and the principles that hold a free society together.

We were especially fortunate to welcome an outstanding lineup of keynote speakers: Nicola Persico (Northwestern University), Stefan Voigt (University of Hamburg), Roberta Gatti (Chief Economist of the Middle East and North Africa region of the World Bank), Maria Paola Ferretti (Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz), and Andrew Clark (Paris School of Economics). See the full agenda here. Everyone’s presence and contributions helped set the tone for a truly dynamic and thoughtful program.

A big thank you to everyone who participated and presented — for your ideas, questions, and generous engagement. And a special shoutout to the organizers: Saura Masconale, associate director of the Freedom Center; Roberto Dell’Anno, professor of public economics at the University of Salerno; and Marcello Puca, assistant professor of public finance at the University of Salerno; whose dedication and efforts made this event not only possible but truly memorable.

The Center for the Philosophy of Freedom was proud to co-sponsor the workshop alongside the Department of Economics and Statistics at the Università degli Studi di Salerno (University of Salerno). Learn more about other European Summer School Workshops and Initiatives here.
